Folio, contemporary vellum, soiled, title laid down, I2 torn (repaired), minor repairs and light staining in the margins of a few leaves, the engraving on Cc2vcropped. Errard was the principal military engineer under Henri IV, to whom the work is dedicated. Rare.

Covers heavily soiled; old ink drawing of a sailing ship on the front, along with some fainter ink flourishes and scribbles. Edges of cover and pages are heavily worn, with significant chipping on the back cover and on the first and last few pages (including the decorated title page). All pages tanned with age; some have spotty stains on the edges. Ink notes on entirety of rear free endpaper. Tears in pages 11-12 and on plates 21 and 23. Binding tight. A ragged but intact and readable copy of a rare 17th-century book. Known as the "father of French fortification," mathematician and engineer Jean Errard (d. 1610) brought Italian methods of military fortification to France at the court of Henry IV. This treatise on the construction of such fortifications is regarded as a classic 17th-century text on the topic. Measures approx. 12.25" x 8". Text is in French. Features 47 plates (43 are two-page spreads) depicting architectural plans for star-shaped "bastion" forts. A RARE MILITARY HISTORY WORK FROM 1617.
