Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. Very interesting book which brings together a few figures from the esoteric, stage and screen, and social reform circles of early 20th century America.??Zoharita?was written by Norweigian American suffragist, Jenova Martin and Minneapolis occult figure, Nicolai Husted under the pseudonym "Mistocles & Jenova," the…play essentially a symbolic/allegorical drama built around mystical ideas.? We find in the?East-West?magazine issue from January, 1929 Martin and Husted linked through the Minneapolis Yogoda Center,?an early American outpost of the movement associated with Paramahansa Yogananda.? This blurb states on the center's first anniversary, Martin was the "leader" and Husted the president.? We find little else on Husted other than he was a professor and wrote at least a few articles for esoteric journals of the time.? Martin was a prominent figure in the women's rights movement in Minnesota, giving speeches and contributing progressive articles to the?Star Tribune?and?Minneapolis Star.?? This copy contains a tipped-in letter from Husted as "Mistocles" writing to the silent film actress, Theda Bara, one of cinema's early sex symbols.? Husted writes: "Dear Theda Bara, Here is a new play, new ideas, and new characters.? Some of the scenes may be partly or entirely omitted, but the main characters and the main ideas will remain intact." It would appear Husted is pitching the play to Bara who was known for her "vamp" roles based in exoticism and occult-inflected mystique.? A wonderful copy of a scarce book and with fascinating provenance.? ? We note 2 physical holdings in OCLC.?? . 8vo, 204pp. Publisher's blind-ruled, olive cloth stamped in gilt. Tipped in at the title is a 9-line autograph note, signed from "Mistocles" (Nicolai Husted) to the actress, Theda Bara. Boards lightly shelf worn, contents clean and nearly fine.
