Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 192 pages with diagrams and indexes. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. First American edition. The Grünfeld Defence (ECO codes D70 D99) is a chess opening characterized by the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 d5. Black offers White the possibility of 4.cxd5, which may be followed by 4.Nxd5 and 5.e4, giving White an imposing central pawn duo. If White does not take the d5-pawn, Black may eventually play .dxc4, when a White response of e4 again leads to the same pawn structure. In classical opening theory this imposing pawn centre was held to give White a large advantage, but the hypermodern school, which was coming to the fore in the 1920s, held that a large pawn centre could be a liability rather than an asset. The Grünfeld is therefore a key hypermodern opening, showing in stark terms how a large pawn centre can either be a powerful battering ram or a target for attack. Condition: Points gently rubbed else very good lacking jacket.

A Very Good Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition, First Printing. Red comb binding; laminated covers of a full color steamboat drawing, 9.25 inches tall; 308 pages, with an index. Carefully used, clean with some pages dog-eared which is always a good sign. First Edition, First Printing. Bicentennial Edition. The Saint Louis Cookbook, Bicentennial Edition presents a collection of favorite recipes selected from friends of the St. Louis Symphony - music lovers, orchestra musicians, celebrities', local restaurateurs (Noonday Club, Stix, Baer and Fuller) and a few politicians' wives, like Mrs. Stuart Symington (Anne Watson Symington), the wife of the longtime Democratic senator from MO (1953-1960). Each recipe contains the name of its respective contributor. The breads, cakes and cookies sections are outstanding because St. Louis is 'a city of great bakers due to the large numbers of Germans and other Central European Immigrants who settled here." There's a great recipe for Dios Kalacs, a Hungarian Nut Pastry, and another for "Kolachy," a filled cookie of Bohemian (Czech) origin. The veal part of the Meat section is entertaining also, such as "Geschnetzeletes," from the German-speaking section of Switzerland. The name means "whittled" or thinly sliced veal steaks, prepared with stock, sliced mushrooms, sour cream and a bunch of scallions. Check the Outdoor Section for Grilling with the inclusion of several sauces.
