The folklore legend of Spring Heeled Jack began in the Victorian Era, when sightings were made of an unknown figure in a shiny suit with helmet and cloak, fiery eyes, hands like iron claws, and the ability to spit flames, scale walls and leap over rooftops. There were reports that he impersonated a policeman, some suggested it was a prank, but his attacks on young women terrorised London and other cities in England. Peter Haining's book on the subject was first published in 1977. In it he examines the reports of Spring Heeled Jack's activities and suggests that more than one person adopted the disguise, including a famous nobleman, the Marquis of Waterford. Barker's script begins with an attack on a young woman by 'the devil-man' and takes up the idea that Waterford with the help of his aristocratic friends was responsible. The investigator, a struggling journalist, assisted by a young widow who he falls in love with, attempts to uncover the truth about Spring Heeled Jack. However, the final confrontation ends tragically for him. Peter Haining (1940 Ğ 2007) was a writer on crime and the occult. A very good copy. c1980 Very good.
