Add to basketBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. Sir Samuel Barnardiston tried for seditious correspondence amid rising political tensions. 20 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the v…oices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Add to basketBooklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1674, Sir Samuel Barnardiston brought a legal action against Sir William Soame, the Sheriff of Suffolk, alleging misconduct in the return of parliamentary election results. Barnardiston had stood for election and received a majority of votes, but Soame refused to declare him duly… elected, citing irregularities and instead returning another candidate. The case raised fundamental questions about the role and discretion of sheriffs in parliamentary elections, and whether their decisions could be challenged in civil court. The trial, heard before Chief Justice Sir Matthew Hale, resulted in a verdict for Barnardiston, awarding him damages. However, the judgment was later overturned in the House of Lords, reinforcing the principle that election disputes lay within parliamentary, not judicial, jurisdiction. The case became a touchstone in the evolving balance between electoral integrity and institutional authority. 29 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Add to basketUnbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. Fourth Edition. Sir Samuel Barnardiston sues the Sheriff of Suffolk over the return of Members of Parliament, leading to a complex series of hearings across multiple courts. The dispute becomes a major constitutional contest over electoral rights, the sheriffs authority, and the judiciarys ro…le in supervising parliamentary elections. 14 PAGES, printed in double columns. A genuine 1778 printing taken from the authoritative Complete Collection of State Trials. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. This particular trial report has been preserved in a modern card cover, prepared for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery. Size: 30 x 47 cms.
