Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1773, James Boswell made a long-planned journey across the Scottish Highlands with his English friend Samuel Johnson; the two spent more than a hundred days together. Their tour of the Hebrides resulted in two books, A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland (1775), a kind of locodescriptive ethnography and Johnson's most important work between his Shakespeare edition and his Lives of the Poets. The other, Boswell's Journal of a Tour tothe Hebrides with Samuel Johnson (1785), a travel narrative experimenting with biography, the first application of the techniques he would use in his Life of Samuel Johnson (1791).These two works forma natural pair and, owing that they cover much of the same material, are often read together, focusing on the Scottish highlands. The text presents a lightly-edited version of both works, preserving the original orthography and corrected typographical errors to fit modern grammar standards. The introduction and notes provide clear and concise explanations on Johnson and Boswell's respective careers, their friendship and grand biographical projects. Italso examines the Scottish Enlightenment, the status of England and Scotland during the Reformation through to the Union of the Crowns, and the Jacobite Johnson's Journey to the Western Islands and Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides form a natural pair for an OWC because both books, often read and taught alongside each other, focus on the Scottish highlands. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Daniel Defoes Journal of the Plague Year is the most vivid first-person account of a pandemic in the English language. The narrative professes to be the daily musings of one H.F., a saddler who continued all the while in London during the Great Plague of 1665, Englands deadliest bubonic plague outbreak in centuries. Defoe wrote and published it a generation later, in 1722, three years after Robinson Crusoe and the same year as Moll Flanders. But while A Journal of the Plague Year shares a devotion to verisimilitude with other works of fiction of the daymany contemporary fictions purported to be histories or true storiesits approach to character is distinctive, as H.F. often recedes into the background. The novels depiction of a diseased city and of the social and religious dimensions of a pandemic seem to anticipate our own age. This edition allows readers to appreciate the novels complexity and apparent contradictions. The introduction and historical appendices (which include materials on plagues and the spiritual, civic, and scientific responses to seventeenth- and eighteenth-century pandemics) make Defoes book and its world accessible to modern readers. Three new maps show England, London, and H.F.s neighborhood in 1665. The Broadview Edition of A Journal of the Plague Year provides an unmatched range of historical materials.
