4to. Title in red & black + [2]f + 372 + 372 + 428 + [2] + 296 + 316p + [10]f index; with 60 engraved plates (37 double-page) including allegorical frontispiece of the victorious William of Orange. Contemporary mottled calf, gilt; worn. First edition in German of this detailed account of the war waged by the French coalition under Louis XIV against the Netherlands 1669-1674. The book is valued for its historical accuracy and for its exceptionally fine engraved illustrations which include 39 plates by Romeyn de Hooghe, identical with those of the Dutch edition (Tooneel des Oorlogs) issued from the same press in the same year. The war consisted of a succession of sieges of Dutch cities and sea battles: these are illustrated in 23 plates of which 13 represent plans of 76 fortresses. Especially noteworthy for the social history of the period are eight evocative double-page copper plates by Romeyn de Hooghe recording war horrors, sufferings of civilians, and the brutal murder of the Witt brothers (some used in Wicquefort's Advis fidelle (The Hague 1673) - see Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration 140). Apart from the representations of battle scenes and famous sieges, other remarkable double-page illustrations depict the swearing-in of William of Orange as captain general in 1672, the breach of the dykes at Coeverde, the eruption of Mount Etna in March 1669 with the City of Catania below, the Turkish conquest of Crete, and a view of Martinique. The 22 full-page plates are fine portraits of prominent leaders (some by C. Hagen): Prince William of Orange, Louis XIV of France, Charles II of England, the Emperor Leopold, the Elector Friedrich of Brandenburg, the prince bishops of Münster and Cologne, Maurice of Nassau, Fieldmarshal Turenne, Admiral Ruyter, Jan & Cornelis de Wit, Admiral Tromp, etc. A few, very occasional light traces of usage, otherwise a very well preserved copy with the bookplate of the art collector Pieter Tjebbes. Landwehr, Romeyn de Hooghe, as Book Illustrator (1970) 41 (note).

Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Amongst the most beautiful fete books published in Spain, with remarkable baroque illustrations by Villafranca [Baroque illustrations; fetes] Rodriguez de Monforte, Pedro. Descripción de las Honras que se hicieron a la Catholica Mag. de D. Phelippe Quarto Rey de las Españas y del nuevo Mundo en el Real Convento de la Encarnacion. 1666. Madrid. Francisco Nieto. 4to, (234 x 160 mm). 11 ff., 120 ff., complete copy, including the engraved title page and 49 copperplate engravings. Later calf to style, blindstamped in plateresque style, spine letter in gilt. Title page a little worn on outer margin, folding plates backed, some tears not causing loss, occasional foxing or finger soiling, overall a very good example of this superbly rare and beautiful book. First edition, a masterpiece of Spanish baroque illustration, most likely by Pedro Villafranca, accounting the description of Philip IV´s (1605-1665) funerals. The death of Philip IV and the funeral to commemorate him were an important event, for the occasion funerary catafalques were built after the designs of Sebastian Herrera Barnuevo. This particular account is focused on the events at the Convent of the Encarnacion, in Madrid. The illustration comprises 49 plates -4 of which are folding- and 9 vignettes, plus the remarkable engraved title page, which is the only plate signed by Villafranca. Even though only the title page and one of the folding plates are signed by Villafranca, it is presumed that the rest of the plates, which are finely executed, were his work too, it was a lavish publication and Villafranca was one of the top engravers active in Spain at the time. The plates consist of 41 emblems, 4 coats of arms, a folding engraved portrait of Philip Iv, a folding plan of the Church, etc. Pedro Villafranca Malagon (c.1615-1684) was a Spanish painter and engraver, quite unanimously recognized as the finest engraver active in Madrid in the second half of the 17th century, famous for his baroque-style plates, such as the ones that compose the illustration of this work. Though only two are firmly known as his, it is widely presumed than the rest are too. The catalogue entry of the Hispanic Society identifies all the engravings as by Villafranca. The frontispiece was designed by Sebastian de Herrera Barnuevo (1619-1671) "active in Madrid and at the royal court as a painter, architect, and sculptor. Until recently, his numerous drawings were usually catalogued under the name of Alonso Cano", the drawing used by Villafranca is defined as "an elaborate allegorical composition that was engraved by Pedro de Villafranca for the frontispiece of a ceremonial book describing the exequies for Philip IV, which occurred in 1665. As the designer of the catafalque and maestro mayor de las obras reales, Herrera was the logical choice to compose this elaborate allegorical composition. Its meaning is naturally keyed to the king's death and couched in a metaphor of the changing seasons. On the left is a female figure identified as Primavera, on the right is a withered male figure holding a leafless tree and labelled Otoño, or Autumn. . ."(Brown, Jonathan. "Spanish Baroque Drawings in the Sperling Bequest", p.376-7) The preparation of the King's body was significant, dressed in a velvet suit embroidered with silver. Institutionally uncommon, according to OCLC, we locate two copies in the United States, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the University of California Santa Barbara; there are also copies at BM Lyon, University of London Library, Universiteit Utrecht, Biblioteca Universidad de Granada, and two further copies in Barcelona; we also locate a copy at the Hispanic society.
