Les Barrau, de Carcenac-Salmiech, ancrés aux marges hautes du Ségala, vers le Lagast, puis le Lévézou, forment l'un des lignages parmi les plus représentatifs des élites terriennes du Rouergue historique. Avec l'affaire Fualdès (1817), dans un Aveyron foncièrement rural, les valeurs essentielles, qu'elles soient matérielles, sociales ou spirituelles, demeurent celles des domaines et des familles. Cet esprit traditionaliste du "vieux Rouergue" qui a été la marque du comportement de certains nostalgiques de l'Ancien Régime, eût pu scléroser les aspirations et les attitudes d'Eugène de Barrau dans une existence confinée de hobereau court de vue sur la marche du siècle.
