Mounted photograph. Condition: Very good. No stated edition. Image is ca. 7 x 10 inches on damaged cardboard mount (ca. 10 x 14 inches). On the mat are printed Barraud's name and addresses plus "W & S Ltd" and "Permanent." Image has trivial wrinkles (from mounting?), visible only under raking light. Else fine and clear. Erroneously identified on the back as Francis Frith (the photographer of Middle East scenes). Large portrait of painter William Powell Frith as an older man. Herbert Rose Barraud (1845-1896) was a noted photographer of prominent Victorians and others, with studios in London and Liverpool. Frith was famous for his large detailed paintings of Victorian life, notably The Derby Day and The Railway Station. This image and mount are identical to a carbon print in the National Portrait Gallery, ca. 1890. Woodburytype was Barraud's typical medium. I'm not expert enough to know which process is here. Shipping/handling will be extra; please keep this in mind when ordering.
