Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Tenth Printing. 282 pages. Illustrated. Exterior is very clean, shows no signs of discoloration or damaging; very minimal creasing to top of spine. Interior text is flawless. A greenhorn's initiation into trail herding, roping, and branding is described with a mastery of language rarely bro…ught to the subject, for Barrows loved books as well as broncobusting. Winters usually found him back at the settlement of Ubet in Judith Gap, where his parents had come to operate a hotel for travelers on the stage line from Billings to Fort Benton. In a few years John Barrows stored a host of impressions of a raw part of the West rapidly changing. Is the reader of his unvarnished reminiscences in for a rousing experience? You bet.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's beige paper wrappers with staple binding. 6 3/4" x 9 1/2." Fifteen pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to extremities, and minuscule splitting along spine. A Very Good copy. Sources of Northwest History No. 1. Part of the… "Historical Reprints" series. "Reprinted from the Historical Section of The Frontier, a Magazine of the Northwest, published at the State University of Montana, Missoula. Vol. VIII, No. 1, November, 1927. [Reprinted in March, 1932]." This historical reprint is an autobiographical account by John R. Barrows when he was "a Wisconsin youth in Montana" from 1880-1882. Barrows's narrative recounts his days traveling as an emigrant on the Overland Trail, traversing sometimes inhospitable prairie, and interacting with many of the locals including trading post employees, cowboys, and members of Indigenous tribes. Much of Barrows's account focuses on his time working as a cowboy. There are also descriptive scenes in which he recollects his interactions with Indigenous people including a time when he frequented a village of the Piegan/Blackfeet tribe out of curiosity.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A voracious reader of dime novels, young John Barrows looked forward to blazing action as an Indian fighter or scout in Montana Territory. But when he arrived with his parents in the Musselshell Valley in 1879 he saw more sheepmen and cattlemen than Indians or Buffalo Bills. He worked in hi…s father's trading post and soon found in the range cowboy his model of manhood. John Barrows recalls his early career as a cowboy for the DHS outfit in the 1880s in U-bet, often overlooked since its original publication in 1934 but regarded by the cognoscenti as a classic to rival Andy Adam's Log of a Cowboy. A greenhorn's initiation into trail herding, roping, and branding is described with a mastery of language rarely brought to the subject, for Barrows loved books as well as broncobusting. Winters usually found him back at the settlement of Ubet in Judith Gap, where his parents had come to operate a hotel for travelers on the stage line from Billings to Fort Benton. In a few years John Barrows stored a host of impressions of a raw part of the West rapidly changing. Is the reader of his unvarnished reminiscences in for a rousing experience You bet.Richard Roeder, a history professor at Carroll College, Helena, Montana, discusses the life of a Milton of the sagebrush in his introduction to this edition.
