Essa era ospitata fin dal 1369 in una apposita cappella nella Chiesa di S.Salvatore in Muro reintitolata a S.Agostino, che i Padri agostiniani avevano in cura dal 1332. La Cappella fu commissionata dalla nobile famiglia dei Boccella i quali ne mantennero la cura nei secoli seguenti come testimoniano i lavori di abbellimento e ampliamento finanziati da Francesco Boccella nel XVII secolo. Dopo la celebrazione del 1690, alle cui spese contribuì il Senato della Repubblica che prese parte in forma ufficiale alla cerimonia, la devozione verso l immagine si diffuse oltre che a Lucca, in altre parti della Diocesi. La Madonna del Sasso deve il suo nome ad una leggenda: si narra che un soldato che aveva perso al gioco scagliasse una pietra contro questo affresco attribuibile al XIII secolo e che la Vergine spostasse prontamente il Bambino Gesù dal lato destro al lato sinistro, così evitando il sasso. 400 gr.
