These are ten individual booklets loosely bound into a hardcover binding with string, measuring 13" x 9.75", respectively. Hardcover is a textured, powder blue cloth. A typed paper label bears the title on the spine. Frontispiece is a majestic, full color portrait of "'Her Majesty The Queen in Her Robes of State' from the painting by F. Winterhalter, graciously lent by Her Majesty specially for 'Sixty Years a Queen'", laid in, with another tissue leaf protectant. Each issue is illustrated in a single color, which varies across booklets. Heavily illustrated throughout with photographs in black and white. Booklets are paginated continuously: Part 1, 1-24 pp. Part 2, 25-46 pp.Part 3, 49-72 pp. (missing pages 47 & 48)Part 4, 72-96 pp.Part 5, 97-120 pp.Part 6, 121-144 pp.Part 7, 145-168 pp.Part 8, 169-192 pp.Part 9, 193-216 pp.Part 10, 217-240 pp. CONDITION: Overall VG. Softcover, large format. Condition: very good condition. Dutch language - undated, ca. 1980 - - ,The Sky is our Ocean' is de geschiedenis van een Engels squadron in de jaren 1940/1945. Dit squadron bevatte bijna uitsluitend mensen van Tsjechische afkomst, die in 1939 hun vaderland ontvluchtten voor de binnenvallende Duitse troepen. Zonder voor-uitzichten kwamen zij via Polen in Frankrijk terecht om vandaar -na de Franse capitulatie - uit te wijken naar Engeland. Daar kregen zij opnieuw een vliegopleiding. Met het oog op taalproble-men besloten de luchtmachtautoriteiten hun een eigen eenheid te geven. Eind juli 1940 ontstond het 311 (Tsjechische) squadron Royal Air Force. Met grote moed en gedrevenheid stortten de Tsjechen zieh in de oorlog, vaak als vergelding voor hetgeen Hitler Duitsland hun had aangedaan. Als een der eersten voerde dit squadron een bombardement uit op Berlijn. Tot half 1942 vlogen ze onder bevel van het, Bomber Commano". Tientallen vliegtuigen en hun bemanningen keerden niet terug naar huis. Naarrnate de angst voor het neerkomen in bezet gebied groter werd - gevangen genomen Tsjechische vliegers stonden bloot aan zware onder-vragingen waarbij de namen van hun in Tsjechoslowakije achter-gebleven familieleden ongewild zouden kunnen worden genoemd - besloten de luchtmachtautoriteiten het squadron niet meer naar door de vijand bezette gebieden te laten vliegen, maar in dienst te stellen bij het,Coastal Command' (kustvliegdienst). Daarbij blonken de Tsjechen algauw uit tegenover hun collega's van andere squadrons. Verscheidene blokkadebrekers werden door hen in de grond geboord, terwijl ook een aantal duikboten het onderspit moesten delven. Zo vloog het squadron tot einde 1945 bij de R.A.F. - De Tsjechen die na hun ,sprong' of noodlanding in een krijgsge-vangenkamp terecht kwamen, hebben zieh zeer verdienstelijk gemaakt bij diverse ontvluchtingen. Een van de beroemdste is wel de ,Grote ontsnapping' uit het kamp Stalag Luft III, waar na het graven van een tunnel maar liefst 76 R.A.F.-vliegers wisten te ontsnappen, waaronder drie Tsjechen. Heiaas werd het overgrote deel van de gevluchten opnieuw gevangen genomen en op order van Hitler werden vijftig van hen vermoord, waaronder een Tsjech; Arnost Valenta. - ,The Sky is our Ocean' beschrijft de keiharde oorlogswaarheid en kan beschouwd worden als een belangrijke oorlogsdocumentaire. 96 p. many photos.
