September 1843 in Berlin geb., studierte in Berlin, hauptsächlich unter K. B. Reichert, N. Lieberkühx und Guido Wagener, wurde 1867 auf Grund seiner Dissertation: "Über die Bauchblasengenitalspalte, einen bestimmten Grad der sogenannten Inversion der Harnblase" (Reichert und Du Bois-Reymond's Arch. f. Anat. und Phys. 1868) zum Dr. med. promoviert und erhielt 1868 die Approbation. Danach studierte er in Wien und wurde 1869 bis 72 Assistent bei R. Wilms und A. Bartels in Bethanien. Seit 1872 als Arzt in Berlin thätig, seit 1899 mit dem Titel Geh. Sanitätsrat, publizierte er, ausser einer Anzahl kleinerer chirurgischer und anthropologischer Aufsätze: "Über abnorme Behaarung beim Menschen" (3 Aufsätze, Zeitschr. für Ethnol., VIII, 1876; XI, 1879; XIII, 1881) - "Die Traumen der Harnblase" (Langenbeck's Archiv XXII. 1878) - "Über Menschenschwänze" (Archiv für Anthrop., XIII, 1880) - "Die geschwänzten Menschen" (Ib. Ploss: "Das Weib in der Natur- und Völkerkunde" wurde nach dem Tode von Pl. zum erstenmale 1887 neu bearbeitet und vermehrt. Maximilian (Max) Carl August Bartels (1843-1904), Arzt und Ethnologe. - Bartels zugeschriebenes, aus dem Nachlass eines Familienmitglieds stammendes Aufsatzfragment, betitelt "Waffen der Indianer". Beginnt: Die Bewaffnung der Indianer besteht, außer den Waffen, welche sie von den Weißen gekauft oder eingetauscht haben, aus dem Bogen und den dazugehörigen Pfeilen, der Kriegskeule oder dem Tomahawk, einer Lanze, einem Schilde und einem Skalpirmesser ." - Die Illustrationen zeigen einen Bogen ("gewöhnlich aus Eschenholz") mit Pfeilen, einen Köcher und und eine Lanze. Oktober 1904 in ebenda) war ein deutscher Arzt und Ethnologe. "Sein Vater (Christian August Bartels (1805-1872)) war ebenfalls Arzt und war lange Zeit Leiter des Krankenhauses Bethanien in Berlin. Bartels studierte Medizin und war Assistent des Chirurgen Robert Wilms am Krankenhaus Bethanien. Er war danach niedergelassener Arzt in Berlin und wurde Geheimer Sanitätsrat. Bekannt ist er für seine Beschäftigung mit Ethnologie. Er schrieb ein Buch über Medizin bei Naturvölkern und bearbeitete die Neuauflagen des Buches von Hermann Heinrich Ploss Das Weib in der Natur- und Völkerkunde. Max Bartels wurde am 22. Juni 1894 Mitglied der Leopoldina. Er war Mitglied der Anthropologischen Gesellschaft (ab 1889 Schriftführer), des Vereins für das Trachtenmuseum (dessen Vorsitzender er wurde), des Vereins für Volkskunde und er war im Sachverständigen-Beirat des Museums für Völkerkunde.
