The book, with plates by Bartlett, Purser, and Allom, was published some time after Carne returned to England, initially in thirty parts of four plates each. Many of the plates in volume 3 are after drawings by Thomas Allom, commissioned by the publishers to complete the illustrations. This work contains 2 full page maps and 118 steel-engraved plates depicting views throughout Syria and Asia Minor, all protected by tissue-guards. All volumes with list of engravings at front, volume three with general index at rear. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. London: Fisher Son and Co., 1838, First Edition. First Edition. Two maps and 120 steel engraved plates including title pages, drawn from nature by William H. Bartlett, William Purser and Thomas Allom. Contemporary half calf, rubbed and worn but structurally intact, gilt decorated spines, titles in gilt, five raised bands, all page edges gilt, plates in clean good condition. John Carne (1789 1844) was a British traveller and author. Carne left England on 26 March 1821 and visited Constantinople, Greece, the Levant, Egypt, and Palestine. In the latter country, while returning from the convent of St Catharine, he was taken prisoner by Bedouins, but, after being detained for some days, was released in safety. On coming back to England he commenced writing for the New Monthly Magazine an account of his travels, under the title of Letters from the East, receiving from Henry Colburn twenty guineas for each article. These Letters were then reproduced in a volume, dedicated to Sir Walter Scott, which went to a third edition. This book is noticeable for the fact that there is not a single date to be found in it except that on the title-page. The publication of this work and his talents for society brought him into familiar intercourse with Walter Scott, Southey, Campbell, Lockhart, Jerdan, and other distinguished men of letters. William Henry Bartlett (March 26, 1809 September 13, 1854) was a British artist, best known for his numerous drawings rendered into steel engravings. Vol I engraved title, blank, title, blank, [2], ii, 80pp; Vol II engraved title, blank, title, blank, [2], 5-76pp; Vol III engraved title, blank, title, blank, [2], 5-100pp, index [4].
