Bernstein (born 1936) is Professor emeritus of History at Stanford University and co-chair of the International Relatio…ns Program and the International Policy Studies Program. He has published about early Cold War history, as well as about the history of nuclear weapons development and strategy during the 1940s and 1950s. He received his Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. He is on the board of advisors for the Center on Peace and Liberty at the Independent Institute. Allen Matusow, Ph.D., is a Rice emeritus faculty scholar at the Baker Institute and the William Gaines Twyman Professor Emeritus of History at Rice University. He joined the Rice faculty in 1963 and served as the dean of humanities from 1981 to 1995. He specializes in 20th-century U.S. history and has written or edited five books, including "The Unraveling of America: A History of Liberalism in the 1960s" and "Nixon's Economy: Booms, Busts, Dollars and Votes", and is currently writing a book on the origins of Jewish and Arab nationalism. Matusow served on the Kinder Institute for Urban Research's advisory board from 2011 until 2021. He received his Ph.D. in American history from Harvard University in 1963. This work addresses The Progressive Era, The Twenties, The New Deal and the Coming of War, and The Era of the Cold War. Among the contributors are Gabriel Kolko, Arthur Link, John Highham, Carl Degler, Gar Alperovitz, Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., Richard Rovere, Leslie Gelb, and John Kenneth Galbraith. Each of the four parts of the book is introduced by a brief discussion of the period covered and the problems of historical interpretation it presents. In addition, the editors and contributors have introduced each essay with background information and some critical reflections. Following the introduction to each part and each essay have been appended an annotated bibliography to assist students in their reading and research. The scholarly literature on the period since 1945 will, be of service to those professors and students interested in the post war years as a subject of historical inquiry. Second Edition [stated].
