Del suo vasto carteggio, composto in origine, verosimilmente, da alcune migliaia di missive - in gran parte già conservate nel disperso archivio personale del pittore -, questa pubblicazione raccoglie un corpus significativo di 337 lettere datate tra il 1803 e il 1857, rintracciate in diversi archivi e trascritte integralmente, che documentano in modo puntuale tanti momenti della sua lunga parabola esistenziale, indissolubilmente legata alle appassionate vicende artistiche del primo Ottocento italiano, tra Neoclassicismo e Romanticismo.
