Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Folio (235 x 356 mm). Concertina manuscript in Hata Poda on folded tree bark, 77 leaves (25 written on both sides), mostly ca. 26-30 columns per page. Profusely illustrated in red and black. Finely carved black wooden covers with rattan strap. An exceptionally large and fine bark book as used by the Batak people of Indonesia. This mid-19th century divinatory manuscript is written in Hata Poda, the esoteric language of shamans (known as 'datu') of the Toba Batak, an ethnic group populating the interior of the province of North Sumatra. It is distinguished by its unusual scale, profuse illustration, and early missionary provenance. - Produced as the working book of a 'datu', the manuscript belongs to the core ritual literature of the Toba Batak, in which bark books, or 'pustaha', served as repositories of divinatory, therapeutic, and magical knowledge. Their texts do not form continuous narratives, but rather mnemonic manuals for the use of the initiated, which explains both their compressed structure and the notorious difficulty of translation. The present manuscript concerns divinatory practice, including the oracle known as 'manuk di ampang' or 'pormanuhon', in which the position of a sacrificed cock was interpreted for decisions such as building a house, entering a marriage, or undertaking other consequential acts. Like other serious pustaha, it was written not in the daily vernacular but in 'hata ni poda', the ritual language of instruction, a deliberately archaic idiom enriched by Malay loanwords. - Collected in the field by J. H. Meerwaldt, the pioneering Rhenish missionary and linguist active in Batak country in the later 19th century, the manuscript belongs to the generation of survivals gathered just as missionary pressure and religious change were eroding the older manuscript culture. By the early 20th century, the production of such bark books had already begun to recede sharply. The combination of exceptional format, carved covers with surviving carrying strap, and a traceable provenance lend this pustaha unusual documentary presence as well as textual and ethnographic importance. - Well preserved, with the carved wooden covers and rattan strap present. - 1) J. H. Meerwaldt (1854-1920), Rhenish missionary and linguist in Batak country, collected in the field. - 2) J. H. Meerwaldt Jr., missionary. - 3) M. Scheffer, Belgium, 1958. - 4) Henry Blekkink collection, Den Haag. - 5) Purchased in 2011 by Robert Van der Heijden, Amsterdam. - 6) French private collection. - Cf.
