Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Add to basketBrown quarter morocco and burgundy cloth, gilt device on boards, top edge gilt, large folio, 36 cm, lxii, 9 pp of plates, 110 + [1] leaves, 113-136 pp. Contents include : Preface; Introduction; A Brief Life of the Ninth Earl of Northumberland; The Advice and the Philosophical Milieu of the Northumberland Circle; Editorial Procedure; The Texts; I The Forlorn State; II This Discours Whiche Concerneth Officers and Servants; III Instructions for the Lord Percy in his Trauells; Textual Notes. "The most obvious reminders at Petworth that Henry Percy, the ninth Earl of Northumberland (1564-1632), once lived there are his books in the library and the posthumous portrait of him by Van Dyck, commissioned by his son Algernon, the tenth Earl (1602-68). The library, in particular, has the imprint of the ninth Earl's personality, both in the books that he bought and the many annotations on their pages in his small, precise, clear hand. Science, mathematics, alchemy, philosophy, architecture and the technique of military fortifications were among the subjects that intrigued him. He read deeply in the Bible and the classics, especially the works of Aristotle.Perhaps the most deeply personal evidence of Northumberland's thought and character is in these 'Advices' that he wrote for his son and heir. They are thoughtful and, for their time, sophisticated; also, perhaps inevitably, given the difficult personal circumstances of their author, heavy with melancholy. More than mere period pieces, they surely deserve to be published again." - from the foreword. The copy of Christopher Dobson, sometime librarian of the House of Lords, with his name printed in red in the list of Members. Fine.
