Published by Francois Peron / Nicolas Baudin / Louis Claude Desaulses de Freycinet / Charles Alexandre Lesueur, 1807
Hardcover. Condition: VG. Baudin-Freycinet Expedition With an Early View of Sydney Beautiful Hand-Colored Natural History Plates by Lesueur With an 1810 Letter from the "Conservateur des Livres, Cartes, et Gravure" First edition of Francois P ron. 3 volumes as follows: 2 quarto text volumes plus 1 royal quarto atlas. A matching set bound in contemporary half calf and marbled boards. The atlas volume expertly rebacked to style. Moderate wear to binding extremities, mainly to board edges and corners. Text volumes: Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. 2. 3 folding tables. Atlas (Partie Historique only, without the Atlas Hydrographie): Engraved title. Engraved title vignette: [6] pages plus 40 plates, comprising: map, five colored coastal profiles, 14 ethnographic plates (8 hand-colored), 8 other views (1 colored, and 2 folding, including Lesueur's view of Sydney), 11 natural history plates (9 colored) and 1 technical plate. Original tissue guards present. Some minimal marginal foxing to a few of the plates. Lacking second part of the atlas which has 14 maps (2 double-page or folding). The second text volume with tipped-in manuscript letter dated 11 June 1810, from Philippe de la Madeleine, on his letterhead as "Conservateur des livres, cartes et gravures au Minist re de l Int rieur." The letter relates to sending along the second volume to "Madame de Ste Criox," possibly the wife of Alexandre Le Bas de Sainte Croix (1859-1828), second in command on Baudin s G ographe during the Baudin-Freycinet Expedition, but also possibly the widow of Guillaume Emmanuel Joseph Guilhem de Clermont Lod ve, baron de Sainte Croix (1746 1809), a noted antiquarian and book collector. Baudin-Freycinet Expedition With an Early View of Sydney Beautiful Hand-Colored Natural History Plates by Lesueur With an 1810 Letter from the "Conservateur des Livres, Cartes, et Gravure" First edition of Francois P ron's important account of the Baudin-Freycinet exploring expedition to the South Seas sponsored by the Institute of France. P ron served as naturalist on the voyage, and prepared a large and renowned zoological collection during the course of the expedition. The accompanying atlas is beautifully executed, with many of the plates hand-colored and an early view of Sydney. Many of the plates are by the noted artist Charles-Alexandre Lesueur. The Baudin-Freycinet Expedition was one of the most significant early explorations of Australia. Commissioned by the French government in 1800, the expedition aimed to complete the cartographic survey of the Australian coastline. Under the command of Nicolas Baudin, the two vessels, G ographe and Naturaliste, departed France in 1800, sailing via Mauritius before reaching the Cape Leeuwin region of western Australia in May 1801. The expedition's scientific personnel included Fran ois P ron, a zoologist and the principal naturalist, and Louis de Freycinet, the expedition s cartographer. From Cape Leeuwin, the ships proceeded northward, meticulously surveying the coastline and recording detailed observations of the natural history and Indigenous peoples before crossing to Timor. After three months, the expedition continued its surveys along the southern coast of Tasmania before reaching Sydney. They subsequently conducted a thorough exploration of Australia s southern coastline, including what is now South Australia and Victoria, followed by an examination of the northern coast. However, before the expedition s return to France, Baudin died in Mauritius in late 1803. Despite Baudin s leadership, the official published account of the voyage largely omits his contributions, a result of the tacit agreement between P ron and Freycinet, who both harbored animosity toward their commander. P ron began writing the expedit. Book.

Hardcover. 1st Edition. 4to., (11 x 7 inches). Half-title. 18 engraved plates on India paper and mounted on heavier stock (some marginal staining), numerous wood-engravings in the text. Near contemporary calf backed marbled paper boards (extremities rubbed). THE PASTRY WAR First edition. The views include images of the West Indies and Mexico. In 1838 Baudin's fleet was sent to blockade Veracruz, which it did with great success: "by engaging the military and depriving Mexico of import duties, its principal source of revenue, France impeded Mexico's attempts to reconquer its rebellious northeastern province, Texas, and avenge the Mexican defeat at the battle of San Jacinto. When negotiations failed to satisfy France's complaints, Baudin's squadron leveled the supposedly impregnable citadel of San Juan de Ullóa on November 27, 1838, earning Baudin international fame as the "hero of San Juan de Ullóa." During the bombardment of the citadel, Baudin's forces further disabled the Mexican army by capturing Gen. Mariano Arista (a future president) and wounding Gen. Antonio López de Santa Anna, whose leg had to be amputated. The Duke of Wellington proclaimed this victory to be the only known instance in history of a regularly fortified citadel's being taken solely by naval force. Accounts vary regarding the ultimate success of the mission, however, because Mexico expelled the French soon after Baudin's departure for Texas, where he became an honorary Galvestonian in May 1839. Louis Eugène Maissin, his aide-de-camp and later chief of staff, published a book in Paris at the end of 1839 describing their military experiences with Mexico and their friendly visit to Texas. His report on the commercial and military potential of the Republic of Texas and the brave and industrious Texans contributed to France's decision to recognize the republic. The role of Baudin in Texas history has been compared to that of the Marquis de Lafayette in the American Revolution, because Baudin and Lafayette personified France's aid to the young republics during their struggles for independence. After a distinguished career Baudin was promoted to admiral by Napoleon III only days before his death, on June 7, 1854" (The Handbook of Texas online). Palau 30412; Sabin 5832; Streeter 1343.
