Eugen (Albert) Baumann (1846-1896), war zunächst als Pharmazeut tätig und wurde, nachdem er das pharmazeutische Examen in Tübingen abgelegt hatte…, 1870 Assistent bei Hoppe-Seyler, bei dem er auch seine Doktorarbeit 1872 machte. Mit Hope-Seyler ging er nach Straßburg, wo er sich 1876 für Chemie habilitierte. 1877 wurde Baumann, der vor seinem Abgang von Straßburg an der Medizinischen Fakultät zum Dr.med.h.c. promoviert worden war, als Vorstand der chemischen Abteilung des Physiologischen Instituts von Dubois Reymond nach Berlin berufen. 1883 ging er als Professor der medizinischen Chemie nach Freiburg. Allgemein bekannt wurde er insbesondere duch seine Entdeckung der gepaarten Schwelsäuren im Harn und durch die Auffindung des organisch gebundenen Jods in der Schildrüse (Jodothyrin). cf. Fischer, p.81 Albrecht Kossel (1853-1927) war ein deutscher Mediziner, Physiologe und Biochemiker. Er wurde 1910 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin ausgezeichnet.

Eugen Albert Georg Baumann (* 12. Dezember 1846 in Cannstatt; ? 3. November 1896 in Freiburg im Breisgau) war ein deutscher Apotheker und Chemiker. Er besuchte das Stuttgarter Polytechnikum und nach einer Lehre in der väterlichen Apotheke wurde er pharmazeutischer Gehilfe in Lübeck und Göteborg. Er studierte dann in Tübingen, wo er 1870 das Apothekerexamen ablegte und 1872 promoviert wurde. Er folgte seinem Lehrer Felix Hoppe-Seyler nach Straßburg, wo er sich 1876 als Privatdozent habilitierte. 1877 wurde er in Berlin Leiter der chemischen Abteilung des physiologischen Instituts bei Emil Heinrich Du Bois-Reymond. 1882 wurde er a.o. Professor für Medizin. Ab 1883 hatte er an der Universität Freiburg als Ordinarius den Lehrstuhl für Medizinische Chemie inne. Im Jahr 1884 wurde er zum Mitglied der Leopoldina gewählt. 1890-91 war er Dekan der Medizinischen Fakultät. 1895 übernahm er mit Albrecht Kossel die Leitung von Hoppe-Seylers Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie. Er untersuchte biologisch interessante schwefelhaltige Verbindungen wie Cystin und Thioketone. Er entdeckte die konjugierten Schwefelsäuren im Urin und fand das Schlafmittel Sulfonal (Diethylsulfondimethylmethan). Zusammen mit seinem Schüler Wolkow entdeckte er im Urin eines Alkaptonurikers die Homogentisinsäure und brachte sie mit dem Stoffwechsel des Tyrosins in Verbindung. Auf ihn geht die Verwendung des Benzoylchlorids zur Charakterisierung von Amino- und Hydroxygruppen zurück. Bekannt ist die Schotten-Baumann-Reaktion. Er starb während seiner Untersuchungen über das organisch gebundene Jod der Schilddrüse. Biological Chemistry, abgekürzt Biol. Chem., ist eine wissenschaftliche Zeitschrift, die vom de Gruyter-Verlag veröffentlicht wird. Die Zeitschrift wurde 1877 von Felix Hoppe-Seyler unter dem Namen ?Zeitschrift für Physiologische Chemie? gegründet. Nach dem Tod von Hoppe Seyler wurde im Jahr 1896 der Name in ?Hoppe-Seyler?s Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie? geändert, die Änderung hatte bis 1985 Bestand. August 1895 in Wasserburg (Bodensee)) war ein deutscher Arzt, Chemiker und Physiologe. Er gilt als einer der Begründer der Biochemie (Physiologischen Chemie) und Molekularbiologie. Hoppe-Seyler gründete 1877 die Zeitschrift für Physiologische Chemie (auch bekannt als Hoppe-Seyler?s Zeitschrift für physiologische Chemie), die heute unter dem Titel Biological Chemistry erscheint. Albrecht Kossel (* 16. September 1853 in Rostock; ? 5. Juli 1927 in Heidelberg) war ein deutscher Mediziner und Physiologe. Er wurde 1910 mit dem Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medizin ausgezeichnet. Albrecht Kossels Forschungsgebiet war der Bereich Physiologische Chemie, insbesondere die Chemie von Geweben und Zellen. Er begann seine Forschungen mit einer Konzentration auf den Zellkern und wandte sich dann mehr und mehr den Proteinen zu, und den Veränderungen von Proteinen bei der Umwandlung in Peptide. An Fischrogen studierte er die Protamin- und Hexonbasen. Er fand heraus, dass es sich bei der von Friedrich Miescher entdeckten Nukleinsäure um ein Polymer handelt. 1886 entdeckte Kossel das Histidin. Danach erarbeitete er eine quantitative Methode zur Isolierung von Hexonbasen. Mit seinem Schüler Henry Drysdale Dakin untersuchte Kossel die Arginase, ein Enzym, welches Arginin in Harnstoff und Ornithin aufspaltet.
