A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of the Rt Hon William Baxter, MP, with the caption "Montrose". William Edward Baxter (1825 Dundee - 10 August 1890) was a British politician and traveller.

This is an excellent opportunity ot purchase a print by Baxter who developed a method of printing in oil colours, using copper pr steel plates for his outlines, with neutral tones on the same plate obtained by aquatint or stipple. This process required between 10 and 20 wooden mental blocks for each reproduction.

Etching, wood engraving, 125 x 160mm, on larger mount, some creases to edges of mount, ink stamp verso- "Webster Collection 5038" A famous image showing the preconceptions of colonial life in the Australian bush. The timber hut not only has have a variety of animal life but also an aborigine dressed in a Maori cloak. This misconception of aboriginal dress had also been used by George French Angas in his image, "Interior of Mount Gambier". Settlers reading letters and a dog and game on the floor with a parrot on a perch.
