Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Bayalos (pinxit), Boilly, Moret, etc. (sculp) (illustrator). Nouvelle Édition. 531 with engraved frontispiece portrait of Corneille by Hopwood and 11 further steel engravings "hors-texte" by Bayalos. Contemporary quarter leather binding in black with raised bands and gilt titles and decoration and blind stamped black percaline boards, eps in imitation of watered silk, aeg. Mild foxing throughout, especially of tissues although plates clean, eps foxed, some mild rubbing of boards. The engravings are the eleven published in Didot's edition of 1795 which appeared in later editions published by Furne from as early as 1844. The plates in this work are also published by Furne. Garnier began to use illustrations by de Staal in the 1880's. No date, c. 1860. A good, sound copy. 4to - over 9¾" - 12".

Mid-19th-century card binding with intricate floral decoration in gilt, red, green blue, and purple. Spine title: Etudes & Plaisirs. Engraved head pieces, tailpiece, and initials. No date of publication; 1852 is the year assigned by the NUC. Part of the series Bibliothèque Spéciale de la Jeunesse. Plates signed: Bayalos. NUC pre-1956, 150:10; Gumuchian, 2281, which gives the date of the first edition as ca. 1842 (the year of the approbation given by the archidiocese in Rouen, p. 5). Inscription on series title page: "Edith Wayne from Miss Magrath 1903." In Fair Condition: both boards are detached but present; lacking 5 cm. of binding on spine at tail; both boards are rubbed, with some loss of color and gilt; light foxing throughout; otherwise pages and plates are clean and bright. A very scarce and nicely illustrated mid-19th-century French children's book.
