The present issue sports a striking Herbert Bayer cover that typifies the Bauhaus master's modernist visual language, aligning typographic economy, visual hierarchy, and symbolic imagery with the topical theme of wartime science and industry. Also features a Bayer graphic in the related Synthetic Rubber article and a Bayer designed ad for Container Corporation of America. Laid in is the supplementary map titled The Atlantic Arena: Orthographic Series 1?folded in four, it opens to 21" x 26.5". Along with war reporting, the issue also contains an article titled "The Negro's War" illustrated with reproductions of paintings by Harlem Renaissance artists Romare Bearden (full-page) and Charles Henry Alston. Austrian-American Bauhausler Herbert Bayer was enlisted by Leo Lionni, then-art director of the ad agency N.W. Ayers, to provide the graphic design. The result is a masterwork of modernist abstract illustration art and visual communication, filled with powerful photomontages and dynamic color layouts. Oblong 8vo (8.25" x 11"), pictorial wrappers, with stapled binding, 32 pages, color offset lithography throughout. Bumping and rubbing to lightly foxed wrappers, with creasing to extremities.

Epic novel set in the Catalonian city of Gerona during the period immediately preceding the Spanish Civil War. "This is the story of a Spanish family [and] of the people of Gerona caught up in an onrushing historical crisis. Representing in themselves the splitting forces that brought on the Civil War, the [family is] torn and puzzled and even destroyed. But they never cease to assert, heart-warmingly, the human estate." Originally published in Spain as "Los cipreses creen en Dios" in 1953, and in the U.S. in a 2-volume edition in 1955, it was the first book in a tetralogy about the Spanish conflict. (This is the second printing of the subsequent one-volume American edition.)
