Classic biography of Justice of the Peace and Judge Roy Bean of Langtry, Pecos County, Texas who, with some bravado, called himself "The Law West of the Pecos" with the geography of his authority spanning the Chihuahuan Desert of west Texas. With masters and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard, renowned regional historian and folklorist C.L. Sonnichsen authored thirty-four books and enjoyed a long career as both an administrator and teacher at University of Texas at El Paso beginning in 1931 and, upon retirement in 1972, he was honored with an emeritus professorship.

This Everett Lloyd biography preceded the similarly titled 1943 Bean biography by southwestern historian and UTEP professor Charles Leland Sonnichsen.
