Softcover. Condition: Very Good. First THUS. Colorado Herald Press, n.d. (turn of the century). Handsome, rare thin 12mo pamphlet, stapled wraps as issued. An obscure and powerful testimony to early teachers of the deaf. Photo of author learning hand signs with his teacher, an introductory verse by W. W. Cooley, followed by the testimonial poem dedicated to Mary White Eastman. A chart of the signs at rear. Former owner name on front endpaper. Bean was sixteen years old at the time of being struck with a baseball at Palo Alto which rendered him unable to hear or hear. Bean became a well known deaf and blind poet. He married one of his instructors at the California School for the Deaf and Blind at Berkeley. Maude (nee Woodworth) became his permanent guide for life, taking the place of Fred Streiff, a close friend and constant companion during the time when the blind and deaf poet was selling his poems among booksellers. This was one of his earliest, if not first, publication.
