Condition: Fine. First Edition. Bound in red cloth with original birch wood veneer covers inlaid into front and rear covers. Red leather spine label. Bound by PETER FRANCK, with his binder's mark in ink a foot of rear pastedown. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR to Mr. Franck on the front free endpaper. Housed in a hand-made slipcase with hand-made marbled paper onlays by the binder. Slipcase lightly rubbed at corners. Sixteen poems all printed on the recto with blank versos. Peter Franck (1883-1976) was a master binder and paper marbler. He learned his craft from an uncle starting at age 13. He worked for Elbert Hubbard at the Roycroft Shop, later established the Oakwood Binders with Sterling Lord, and ultimately founded his own bindery where he became the primary binder for Dard Hunter. Martin sat on the Louisiana Supreme Court from 1815-1846, the last ten years as its presiding judge. Prior to his tenure on the Supreme Court, he served on the Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans. His reports, which commenced in 1809, were the first produced in Louisiana. Christy's Digest was intended to "facilitate the researches of professional gentlemen, and to present to the public in the most simple and condensed form, the points of law which have been decided by the highest tribunals of the state of Louisiana and the late territory of Orleans" (v). This book was likely owned by Horace Edward Upton [1845-1914], a lawyer from a prominent New Orleans family. OCLC locates 11 copies in North American law libraries.
