Claude Pélieu (1934-2002), acteur important de la contre-culture considéré comme le seul poète et artiste Beat français, fut, avec sa compagne Mary Beach, le traducteur et propagateur de William S. Burroughs en France. Exilé dès 1963 à San Francisco, il y rencontra les écrivains et poètes de la Beat Generation. Première publication en édition pirate de Claude Pélieu, dans une traduction américaine de sa future femme Mary Beach, réalisée à partir du manuscrit français - Pélieu ignorait alors la langue anglaise - aujourd'hui perdu. Claude Pélieu publie dans les années 50 ses premiers textes dans des revues anarchistes, notamment dans Le Libertaire où il s'illustre avec une nécrologie provocatrice de Paul Claudel : "[.] Paul Claudel est mort, la poésie n'a rien perdu : nous non plus d'ailleurs." Avec Automatic Pilot il inaugure ce qui sera la langue caractéristique de son écriture à venir dans un mode d'expression se rapprochant du cut-up : un flux nerveux et morcelé de scripts semblables au langage télégraphique où se télescopent des séquences juxtaposées rythmées par des tirets séparant des groupes nominaux. Son écriture, tout comme celle de Burroughs et de Debord dont il a sans doute subi l'influence, procède de l'activisme politique, avec pour cible la société de consommation et l'aliénation de l'humain. Les images sont violentes et tiennent de la profération dans une sorte d'oralité de l'écrit, le devoir du poète étant de secouer, d'attaquer, l'esprit public sinon, comme interroge Antonin Artaud, "à quoi sert-il ?" Lettre à René Guilly, 7 février 1948. En septembre 2002, trois mois avant sa mort, Claude Pélieu avait émis le souhait de voir publier un recueil de ses textes américains, dont Automatic Pilot. Malheureusement, Le texte est toujours inédit en France. "[.] And the sorrow of solitude in a world where Beauty moves -- ." (Et la tristesse de la solitude dans un monde où se meut la Beauté) Notre exemplaire est accompagné d'un envoi autographe de Pélieu à Norman O. Mustill, artiste plasticien, qui collabora, par ses collages, à l'éphémère revue Bulletin from nothing éditée par Claude Pélieu et Mary Beach en 1965. Traces de manipulation. On trouve dans ce recueil une compilation d'extraits de journaux, des poèmes, des textes divers, écrits par Allen Ginsberg. Superbe état général. Rare.

Contents feature "Who Are The Beatniks???" - Zugsmith's attempt in several paragraphs to explain "the wildness and weirdness" of the beatniks - together with a glossary of terms and 13 stills from the film, showing Steve Cochran, Mamie Van Doren, Ray Danton, Louis Armstrong, and others.
