For half a century, Dr. Gates produced a prodigious output of research and writing on education, particularly the teaching of reading, totaling 300 titles of books, monographs and articles. An exponent of the newer work and play reading materials, he advocated "a program in reading which would satisfy the needs of widely different individuals." He edited and revised a reading series for Macmillan for many years and also supervised reading tests published by Teachers College Press.
