Painter-in-Ordinary to the King, Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755) was the inspired champion of royal hunting. No artist of the reign of Louis XV knew better than him how to evoke the world of hunting, depicting the forests of Compiègne or Fontainebleau, and translating into painting the coats of dogs, the antlers of deer, and the plumage of game. His artfrom drawings on blue paper to large-format canvasesexerted a notable influence in a wide variety of fields, particularly the decorative arts. This richly illustrated catalog explores the genesis of Oudry's masterpiece, the cartoons of the Royal Hunts, intended to be translated into tapestries by the Gobelins factory. These monumental works detail the stages of a free-run, a ritualized exercise skillfully orchestrated by a majestic apparatus.
