hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Cloth. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Hardback. First Edition. Closed tear to bottom edge of spine of cloth. Repair to bottom edge of spine of D/J. Slight wear to corners of D/J. it was Apollinaire who proclaimed the need to combine order and adventure in the writing of poetry; but the tendencies towards tradition and formal discipline on the one hand, and experiment and innovation on the other, are to be seen throughout the century and a half since Nerval and Baudelaire. The poets fiscussed in the twenty essays including in the volume, range in time from Nerval and Baudelaire to Desnos and Aragon, and the treatment varies from the close textual analysis of individual poems to a general 'placing' of certain poets against the intellectual background of their age. Attenton is paid to the poeme en prose, and there is a general discussion of the contribution made by 'order', as well as 'adventure', to the freedom of the imagination in the post-Romantic era. This approach results in a multiple presentation of the work of several poets. Baudelaire, Mallame, Apollinaire and Valery are all the subject of more than one essay and receive very different forms of exposition by scholars writing from various critical standpoints. Catholicity of approach is also to be found in the inclusion of essays on poets insufficiently know in this country - e.g. Jouve, Jacob and Reverdy. 269 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
