En su etapa de estudiante (finales del 1425 - comienzos del 1426), el humanista Antonio Beccadelli, el Panormita, compuso el Hermaphroditus, título que alude al contenido tanto heterosexual como homosexual de la obra. Es una obra poética de carácter festivo que toma como modelo a Marcial… y a los Priapeos, en la que revela que sabía compaginar bien sus estudios con la diversión de la vida estudiantil. Beccadelli aspiraba a que su obra estuviera a la altura de estos modelos. Pero esto no valió para sus opositores. El papa Eugenio IV prohibió la lectura del Hermaphroditus y en varias ciudades como Bolonia o Milán se quemó públicamente. Los humanistas se encontraban divididos al respecto. El tono marcialesco fue bien recibido por figuras como Poggio Bracciolini o Guarino de Verona, aunque luego la presión social y religiosa, que consideraba «obscena» la obra, los llevó a condenarlo, como también hicieron otros. En este aspecto Beccadellli cometió un error grave de perspectiva. La imitación de Marcial no justificaba, en una sociedad en la que predominaba la moral católica, la expresión abierta y complaciente de la moral pagana de esta obra. A ello contribuyó el hecho de que en Beccadelli el tratamiento del elemento erótico manifiesta una óptica diferente a la de Marcial. En éste predomina la burla sobre la complacencia, mientras que en el Hermaphroditus predomina la complacencia sobre la burla. Esta obra es la que más fama le dio, pero también fue un baldón que lo persiguió toda su vida, hasta que encontró el favor de Alfonso V el Magnánimo, rey de Nápoles, a partir del año 1443, bajo cuya protección pudo desarrollar su labor literaria.
