Lange Zeit belegten Studien unterschiedlichste negative Auswirkungen bilingualen Aufwachsens. Der frühe Erwerb mehrerer Sprachen wurde häufig mit Spracherwerbsverzögerungen, Sprachverwirrung, Überforderung, negativen Auswirkungen auf die allgemeine kognitive Entwicklung sowie die Intelligenz und mit einer erhöhten Gefahr für Identitätskonflikte in Verbindung gebracht. In einer späteren Phase wurde Mehrsprachigkeit extrem positiv betrachtet und es wurden Mehrsprachigen bessere kognitive Fähigkeiten, höhere Intelligenz sowie eine gesteigerte Kreativität zugeschrieben. Auch diese Behauptungen wurden durch Studien unterstützt (vgl. Belliveau, 2002). Andere Autoren postulieren heute, dass gar keine besonderen Unterschiede zwischen Monolingualen und Mehrsprachigen bestünden. Dies begründen sie damit, dass selbst Einsprachige nicht wirklich nur über einen sprachlichen Code verfügen, sondern sich je nach Situation unterschiedlicher Ausdrucksweisen bedienen oder auch Dialekte sprechen, die sich teilweise mehr von der Standardsprache unterscheiden als nahverwandte Sprachen (vgl. Fabbro, 1999, S. 104). Eine stark diskutierte Frage ist zudem, wie mehrere Sprachen in einem Gehirn repräsentiert und verarbeitet werden und ob bzw. ab wann mehrsprachige Kinder über getrennte Sprachsysteme verfügen. Auch hierzu wurden unterschiedliche Theorien aufgestellt.Diese Arbeit widmet sich dem frühen, simultanen Bilingualismus und seinen Auswirkungen auf den Spracherwerbsprozess sowie die allgemeine kognitive Entwicklung. Zudem befasst sie sich mit der Frage nach der Verarbeitung und Speicherung mehrerer Sprachen in einem Gehirn. In Kapitel 2 dieser Arbeit wird zunächst Sprachkompetenz definiert und die einzelnen zu erwerbenden Teilkompetenzen vorgestellt. Anschließend wird ein allgemeiner Überblick über die Entwicklung von Sprachkompetenz gegeben. Auf den Schriftspracherwerb und die Entwicklung von Lesekompetenz wird in dieser Arbeit nicht eingegangen. Im dritten Kapitel werden wichtige Aspekte zur frühen Bilingualität dargestellt. Kapitel 4 befasst sich mit dem Spracherwerb im Falle früher Bilingualität und dem Zusammenhang mit der allgemeinen kognitiven Entwicklung. In der Schlussbetrachtung werden die Erkenntnisse zusammengefasst und ein Ausblick gegeben, welche Bereiche weiter erforscht werden müssen, um genauere Aussagen über den doppelten Erstspracherwerb und die Zusammenhänge mit anderen kognitiven Kompetenzen treffen zu können.
