Hardcover. Condition: Poor. Physiological Mysteries and Revelations in Love, Courtship and Marriage: An Infallible Guide-Book for Married and Single Persons, in Matters of the Utmost Importance to the Human Race. By Eugene Becklard, M.D. Translated from the Third Paris Edition by Philip M. Howard, M.D. New York, n.p. 1842, 192 p. Brown cloth binding measuring 4.5 x 2.75", 48mo. In poor condition. As is. Binding broken at pages 16-7 & 176-7. Cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine lacking. Gilt lettering on front board normally dulled, but legible. Old-hand previous ownership signature, in ink, on front end-page. Foxing and toning throughout text-block. Cording exposed, some broken. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. "Eugene Becklard" is introduced in the 1844 edition as the author of a work that has been translated from the French by Philip M. Howard, M.D., from the third Paris Edition. There are no records of Dr. Eugene Becklard, although Dr. Pierre Augustin Béclard (1785 1825) and Dr. Jules-Auguste Béclard (1817 1887) did live and practice in Paris and may have inspired the pseudonym. Later editions translated by M. Sherman Wharton, M.D., and claiming to be based on the fourth Paris edition were, in fact, identical to the previous translation by Howard. What the book insists upon is that woman s physiological essence is the single most important factor in determining her character and her destiny. As such, fraudulent though it is, it represents the new scientific trend in the study of gender and education and was cited as such by those who did not dig too deeply into its background. 4.75 x 4", brown cloth with gilt spine lettering, 256 pp, 16 illustration plates on yellow paper. A 19th century American sex manual, first published in 1842 and claiming to be a translation from the Third Paris Edition, and written by a French physician. However, this French origin was "a complete fabrication using a false medical pedigree to discuss sexuality" (McDayter, Flirtation and Courtship in Nineteenth-Century British Culture). The book contains sections on sterility, the art of beauty and courtship, the dangers of masturbation, love and marriage, and more. The book also contains a section on contraception, listing eight such methods, including "dancing about the room, before repose, for a few minutes," and "trotting a horse briskly over a rough road on the following day." A very good copy with rubbing and discoloration to covers, slight foxing to pages.
