This is part of a series of "Curtain-Raiser Books"; substantial stories that were made famous as ballets or operas. The books, published simultaneously by Watts and by Dent in the U.K., were originated in Czechoslovakia with the English versions based on a translation by Jean Layton. This "Swan Lake" features a longer, slightly different version of the story to the Tschaikowsky ballet, and boasts color illustrations by a well-known Czech artist. This copy is a pretty unsullied ex-library copy with just a "withdrawn" rubber stamp on three prelims in the front and two at the back. (The rear endpaper has been neatly removed, but as this has still left a blank page intact, it is hardy noticeable.) There's a small area of heavy black marker on front endpaper and a sticker asking children to wash their hands before reading the book. The top edge of the boards shows some old, faint damp damage which doesn't detract much from the lovely pale blue cloth. One page has been torn on the top edge and repaired with tape. Still a very good, well-bound, sound copy in a very good dust jacket with the light damp staining to top edge and a small library label on base of spine. Presents better than it sounds.
