With some remarks and directions touching trade, &c. The whole very pleasant and useful to such as shall have occasion to go into those parts. Illustrated with several curious maps and cuts. FIRST EDITION 1718, 8vo, approximately 190 x 120 mm, 7½ x 4¼ inches, 2 engraved maps, 1 folding, 5 engraved plates, 2 folding, pages: [16], 1-205, [3] - adverts, complete with half-title, rebound at sometime in crushed morocco, blind ruled border to covers, raised bands and gilt lettering to spine. Covers slightly marked, neat name and date 1949 on front endpaper, small 'withdrawn' ink library stamp to top margin of half-title, no other library marks, pale stains, brown marks and pale soiling to several margins, pale foxing to some lower margins including 1 folding plate, tiny chip to 2 upper margins neatly repaired, not affecting text, 2 inner margins have small neat repairs, not affecting text, 1 folding map foxed, affecting adjacent text page, 3 pale fox spots to another plate. Binding tight and firm. A good copy. Daniel Beeckman was captain of an English merchant ship trading for the East India Company and here relates his observations on a trip made in 1713. The work is described by Cox as "an unusually interesting and well-written volume of travels. On the way from Borneo the author visited the Cape of Good Hope, and gives a lengthy account of the country and the Hottentots. In his description of Borneo he speaks of the 'Oran-Ootan' the most remarkable animal there". This was the first European reference to the Orang-utan which is depicted in one of the plates.
