Although collected between the two world wars, it reflects an Edwardian taste for lavishness and represents the fruits of the unrivalled buying opportunities enjoyed by collectors in what may now be seen as a time of plenty. When the collection was gifted by the Art Fund to The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, County Durham, in 2003, the Museum already housed one of the most important collections of fine and decorative art in the United Kingdom and had been 'designated' in 1997 by central government for its quality. The Museum was purpose-built in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes who collected most of their paintings, textiles, furniture, pottery and porcelain in Paris including French faïence and soft-paste porcelain.
