[Paris], Maeght éditeur, [1988]. 455,[1] pp. Col. & b./w. ills. Orig. hardcover (red-brown linen with gold lettering), d./j. 4to. An important monograph on Godfried Schalcken (Made, 1643 - The Hague, 1706). With oeuvre catalogue. - Text in French. - Godfried Schalcken was a Dutch painter who worked in the tradition of the "Leidse fijnschilders" (Leiden fine painters). He is known for his genre paintings, portraits, and history paintings. He studied with Samuel van Hoogstraten in Dordrecht before moving to Leiden, where he continued his studies with Gerard Dou. His earliest genre paintings are reminiscent of Dou's work. In 1675, he returned to Dordrecht, subsequently working in The Hague. Between 1692 and 1697, Schalken worked for a time in England but did not settle in well there. In 1703, he worked for John William of the Palatinate in Düsseldorf. Schalcken painted several portraits, including one of William III of Orange (Rijksmuseum Amsterdam). Like Dou, Schalken specialized in painting small candlelit scenes.
