Behring, Gestalt und Werk von H. Zeiss & R. Bieling, 1941, Lichtdruck, 127 x 83 auf 209 x 142 mm. Emil Adolf Behring, ab 1901 von Behring (1854-1917) Mediziner, Immunologe und Serologe. Er war Begründer der passiven antitoxischen Schutzimpfung ("Blutserumtherapie") und erhielt 1901 den ersten Nobelpreis für Physiologie oder Medi…zin. Besonders aufgrund seiner Erfolge bei der Entwicklung von aus Blutserum gewonnenen Arzneimitteln gegen die Diphtherie und den Wundstarrkrampf (Tetanus) wurde er in der Presse als "Retter der Kinder" und - da das Tetanusheilserum insbesondere den Verwundeten des Ersten Weltkriegs zugutekam - als "Retter der Soldaten" gerühmt. Behring wurde daraufhin 1915 von Kaiser Wilhelm II. mit dem Eisernen Kreuz am weißen Bande ausgezeichnet.
