Uniform library binding. Short title and volume number stamped in gilt on the spines. Condition of volume I: Bookplate and "676" sticker on front pastedown. Tear in the fore edge of page vii/vii. Leaf containing xv/xvi missing. Two charts and frontispiece missing. Head darkened. Text block is lightly foxed and age toned. Some small brown marks. Binding strong and square. Spine sunned. Boards and spine worn, rubbed, and lightly bumped in the corners. Condition of volume II:ÂBookplate and "677" sticker on front pastedown. A second bookplate pasted on the verso of the title page reads " Rugby School. Rev. R. B. Mayor's House Library 185_."ÂText block is lightly foxed and age toned. Some small brown marks. Binding strong and square. Spine and head sunned. Corners bumped, with the front right corner also creased. Boards and spine worn and rubbed, with small tears in the tail and in the front hinge by the crown. Overall condition of the set is fair.

Engraved linen backed sea chart, showing Resolution Bay, located in current day Vanuatu (New Hebrides); the bay was named by Captain James Cook in 1774 (who also named the islands the New Hebrides), after his ship the H.M.S. Resolution. In 1840 Belcher was surveying for the British government at the… time he made this chart, but was diverted to take part in the first Opium War. During the war he made the first British survey of Hong Kong Harbor. With soundings and coral marked. Also indicated are Point Carteret, Point Resolution, Missionary House, Huts, and Watering Place Hot Spring. Mounted on white linen with green silk borders at 3 sides & green tie, for rolling and closing the map. With the Hydrographic emblem and price. Chart Number 1508 at lower right corner; sold by R. B. Bate Agent for the Admiralty Charts, 11 Poultry. 11 1/4 x 10 1/4". Some spotting at top and bottom margins, the green silk borders a bit rubbed.
