(Square folio) 34.1x33.5 cm (13½x13¼"), original stiff pictorial wrapper. Original pictorial covers with spine reppaired. The first book by the young artist Edy-Legrand (1892-1970), whose illustrations, paintings, and decorations for cruise ships and Parisian boutiques had a great influence on the development of Art Deco. The large plates are colored by luscious pochoir by noted French printmaker Jean Saudé (1872-1931) in a range from monochrome to rainbows of bright colors.OCLC Number / Unique Identifier:7713053:The first children's book published by NRF, and one of the masterworks of children's literature created by the young painter Edouard Warshawsky, known as Edy-Legrand, stencilled in color by Jean Saudé. The fable tells the story of a brown woman and a white man living harmoniously on an idyllic island, filled with marvelous animals and flowers, whose existence is threatened by the forces of colonialization represented by the arrival of a naval ship and its sailors. The images and compositions display the influence of Fauvism and Cubism, and the way they inhabit and move within the page has been compared by Claude-Anne Parmégiani to the syncopated rythms of jazz.
