La ricerca prende spunto dalle finestre che Michelangelo realizza durante la prima fase della sua carriera architettonica nell'angolo di palazzo Medici a Firenze, dove sono chiuse le arcate della loggia quattrocentesca. Dura…nte il XVI secolo si dicono inginocchiate le finestre al piano terreno con le inferriate in aggetto e davanzali sorretti da mensole che, oltre al caratteristico profilo a S, possono assumere un'ampia gamma di configurazioni e un'estensione variabile: un tipo di finestre che non ha precedenti nell'architettura antica e non compare nei trattati rinascimentali. L'approfondimento di varie questioni relative alle inginocchiate medicee, dalla cronologia agli studi grafici, è la premessa per il loro inquadramento critico nell'esperienza architettonica di Michelangelo. Sono inoltre indagati i riflessi dell'inserimento di ampie finestre nel registro inferiore: una novità per i palazzi fiorentini, che valorizza il piano terreno dal punto di vista funzionale e ornamentale. Lo studio dei manufatti che schermano le aperture, come inferriate, gelosie, scuri, impannate, vetrate, si collega alla particolare attenzione riservata alle relazioni percettive fra esterno e interno, incentrate sul tema della riservatezza. Le inferriate sporgenti favoriscono gli affacci, ma le convenzioni sociali limitano la presenza delle donne alle finestre. L'interrogativo se Michelangelo abbia progettato altre finestre di questo genere risulta controverso e riguarda soprattutto porta Pia a Roma. Le inginocchiate ottengono una limitata diffusione a livello nazionale, mentre la loro fortuna si consolida nel tempo a Firenze, dove diventano un motivo caratteristico dell'ambiente urbano e costituiscono occasioni propizie per reinventare i prototipi di Michelangelo.
