First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Articles gathered together and bound in half leather with cloth covered boards; leather crazed at spine and quite rubbed at extremities. The papers published in this first year of the ongoing Association were: 'A Report of the Organization of the American Economic Association' by Richard Ely; 'The Relation of the Modern Municipality to the Gas Supply' by Edmund Janes James; 'Cooperation in a Western City', by Albert Shaw; 'Cooperation in New England,' by Edward Webster Bemis; and 'Relation of the State to Industrial Action', by Henry C[arter] Adams. Special interest attaches to this last paper at the end of the volume. Published in January of 1887, this paper by Henry C. Adams appears to have been acquired by John R. Commons separately -- in its original pamphlet form. He signed his name [as "J. R. Commons"] in ink on the upper right-hand margin of the title page and made marks and notes throughout his copy on many (if not most) pages. Some of these marks are limited to marginal ticks and a few phrases underlined, but there are also extensive notes in holograph, mostly pencil -- often filling the blank lower margins of pages. A few notes continue on the rear endpapers. This complete copy of the first volume of the AEA papers was privately bound for John R. Commons -- [see the binder's ticket of "Pelton and King, / Binders / Middletown, Ct." mounted to the lower inner corner of the pale yellow front paste-down endpaper. The ownership is denoted by the name "J. R. COMMONS" stamped in gilt letters at the foot of the spine. Commons and Henry C. Adams are both major and influential figures of their time in American economic throught. The older man, Adams [1851-1921] shared with J. R. Commons a background of studies at Johns Hopkins -- (and Germany, as well]. Adams earned one the first four degrees of Ph.D. ever to have been awarded by Johns Hopkins. Adams was a lecturer and then a Professor at Cornell betewn 1880 and 1887. He was dismissed from Cornell as a radical as a result of his address -- "The Labor Problem." In his first year at the University of Michigan Adams become head of the newly created Department of Economics. John R. Commons [1862-1945] grew up in the midwest and became an early adopter of the economic and taxation proposals of Henry George. He had a comparatively untraditional path through the University system, but he did graduate from Oberlin College and subsequently spent two years in post-graduate studies at Johns Hopkins under Richard T. Ely -- (a pioneer of progressive thought and principal organizer of the American Economic Association). Adams taught at Syracuse Univeristy from 1895 until he was dismissed as a radical -- an interesting echo of the earlier dismissal of Henry C. Adams from another Eastern institution of learning. Like the older man, Adams eventually went west. When he re-entered Adademic life, it was at the University of Wisconsin in 1904, brought by Richard T. Ely to teach and to edit the eleven-volume 'Documentary History of American Industrial Society.' Commons never left that institution, where memorials to his name and memory abound -- made manifest in place and thought (not least through the 1913 handsome hilltop house built for John and Nell Commons, now on the National Register of Historic Places. Scholars (and practitioners) of public policy still speak of the "Wisconsin Idea" -- largely Commons' creation. Many of his ideas, papers (and students) formed the basis for the Rooseveltian New Deal. Some still think of John R. Commons as the spiritual father of Social Security. His copy of the first volume of the AES papers, especially the paper by Henry C. Adams with his notes is not just a provenance to excite the interest of book collectors, but, with his extensive notes, this volume certainly is an object of potential significance to historians of American Economic thought.
