This edition of the Passover Hagadah is comprised of a reproduction of the illustrated manuscript Haggadah originally created by Rabbi Moses ben Nathan, in 1816. Added to the Haggadah is the text from "Ma'ase L'Melech", a collection of sayings and scriptural interpretations of various past Chassidic Rabbis, here applied to the text of the Passover service. The interleaved illustrations include lithographic reproduced images in black after the original images, and a double-sided leaf containing b/w reproductions after images of past Rabbis. Text throughout in Hebrew, with separate English-language cover and title page at the rear of the book block. Binding with light bumping and rubbing to the extremities. Interior with some staring at the gutters of a few pages, as well as some sporadic water staining to some pages throughout. Book block still fairly tight overall. More than 20 colorful paintings depict Bible episodes, including Jacob and the Angel, Abraham and Isaac, The Wise Son, The Simple Son, The Son Who Does Not Know how to Ask; the Finding of Moses, the Plague of Frogs, Manna from Heaven, etc. Fine in patterned boards and decorated slipcase. An eight page pamphlet explaining the history and iconography in Hebrew and English is included.

The author, Abraham ben Nathan, (a.k.a the Rabn ha-Yarhi) was born in the second half of the 12th century. He began this work in 1204. The extreme importance of this work goes well beyond the limited influence it had on the history of Jewish legal codes, for it contains numerous literal quotations from the two Talmuds and most of the halakhic and haggadic Midrashim, as well as from certain collections of the Haggadot which have been wholly lost; so that the "Manhig" contributes considerably to the textual criticism of all of those works. Text in Hebrew. Pp. 1-18 are detached but present. Minor foxing and marginal pencil and pen marks and underlining throughout. Long inscription in pen on front endpaper with notes taken from the Jewish Encyclopedia entry regarding the author. Book is in overall good condition.
