Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. This SCARCE 610 pp. book is subtitled, " . Being a Complete and Authentic Description of the Columbian Exposition From Its Inception". The large volume is profusely illustrated with engravings made from photographs and drawings of exhibits in the various departments. Other than a prior owner's name atop the first blank flyleaf, the book internally is pristine & unmarked. The boards are gloriously embossed with World's Fair designs, BUT the spine is chipped at the top AND is missing the bottom 2" exposing the paper underlayment, PLUS the front spine edge -- top to bottom, is very rough. The book has normal bumped corners as a 130 year old book would, and it is perfectly handleable and readable. It is a classic, printed by several companies. This Publisher lists at $100 - $225, but I've priced it down to account for the spine damage. -- THE PHOTO IS A STOCK IMAGE -- NOT A PHOTO OF THIS COPY !!.

Published by Los Angeles: [Muir Dawson,] 1951., 1951
Seller: Michael R. Thompson Books, A.B.A.A., Los Angeles, CA, U.S.A.
In the introduction, Dawson writes, ÒThis survey of Southern California newspapers was printed in the Los Angeles Star, July 15, 1873. The article was unsigned but undoubtedly the work of the editor, Ben C. Truman. Truman had recently made a tour of Southern California, probably for the purpose of scouting out the competition and digging up ideas for the Star, which he had taken over only two weeks before the appearance of this article. As far as can be determined, he included every newspaper that was in operation in July of 1873. He did not include the Inyo Independent, which he would not have considered in Southern California, nor did he include the Santa Barbara Tribune, which was mainly an amateur newspaper. The most revealing information preserved by Truman in his survey was that concerning circulation. 500 to 700 was considered very substantial, while 300 was about average. This reprinting is made to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of printing in Southern California, which began with the first issue of the Los Angeles Star on May 17, 1951.Ó Twelvemo. 9 pp. Title-page printed in black and red. Printed blue paper wrappers. A fine copy. One of 165 copies. This is one of a small number of items printed by Muir Dawson, co-owner of he legendary Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles.
