Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A wonderful section of illustrations depicting the art of heat lamp enamelling from Denis Diderot's renowned and controversial Encyclopédie. A contents page and five plates demonstrating the process of heat lamp enameling from Denis Diderot and Jean d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, published between 1751-1772. Bound in soft paper wraps. Its structure based on Ephraim Chamber's Cyclopaedia, the Encyclopédie was the first French language work of this genre, consisting of twenty-eight volumes in total. Seventeen are textual, containing more than 71,000 articles and the remaining eleven volumes contain illustrations. Diderot's masterpiece was a controversial and heavily censored publication; contributed to by many great French scholars including Voltaire and Rousseau. There are around 2,500 engravings depicting a vast array of contemporary technological and artistic practices. These particular plates have been attributed to Robert Bénard who contributed a significant number of plates overall, alongside Louis-Jacques Goussier and Charles-Nicolas Cochin. A fantastic segment of one of the most monumental texts from the French Enlightenment movement. Bound in soft paper wraps. Externally, generally smart. Creasing to the wrap at extremities. The odd handling mark. Ink to front wrap. Front wrap slightly strained and lifting from binding to text block though holding firm. Internally, binding strained though firm. Minor age toning to plates and offsetting to text page with the odd spot. Very Good. Robert Bénard (illustrator). book.
