Four small spots on outer edges of pages From Duke University Press: "Father Antonio Margil de Jesús, a Spanish Franciscan missionary, worked in Central America and Mexico from 1684 until 1716. From that date to 1722, he played a significant role in reestablishing the missionary frontier in Texas. Aside from his long journeys, during which he preached and founded missions, he was often selected by his superiors for positions of leadership and authority. In February of 1720, he founded at San Antonio, the most successful of all Texas missions, San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. Even though his career in Texas was short, he is one of the most famous missionaries to serve in Texas. This book contains sixty-six of Margil?s letters, each of which is translated and edited with introductory comment and notes. Signed by Author(s).
