"By 1817 the once powerful and vast Cherokee Nation faced serious problems. Its territory had shrunk alarmingly in size as a result of treaties and land cessions with the Colonies and later with the United States. Population growth was stymied, in part because of voluntary migration to the West by many Cherokees. The Cherokees were clearly at a crossroad and it was apparent to many of their more progressive leaders that to survive in the East, changes would have to be made. They would have to learn the ways of the enterprising whites, and to do this, more Cherokees would have to learn to read, write, and use arithmetic. Education on a larger scale than the few white itinerant teachers were providing would be required. But permitting more whites into the Cherokee Nation would not be an easy sell to some of the traditionalists and full-blood chiefs. Relations between the Cherokees and whites had varied over the years from peace to periods of bloody warfare, the latter usually due to unlawful intrusion of white settlers, and broken treaties.".
