The author, a prominent woman in the Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy, provides rich descriptive accounts, contrasting the simple ship-launching ceremonies of the early US Navy with the elaborate events of later years. She explains that until 1914, the Navy had no set policy regarding the choice of ship names, but in that year, thanks to the efforts of the Society of Sponsors, the Navy adopted a new naming system and began to invite the President, governors, and mayors to nominate sponsors to break traditional champagne bottles and name ships. The book offers a wealth of historical anecdotes and details about these ceremonies, giving valuable insights into the intersection of naval tradition, social history, and the significant role of women in these events. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Cloth Covered Boards. Condition: Fair. First Ediition: Second Printing. blue boards with gold titles at front and spine, front with "Society of Sponsers of the United States Navy" emblem in gold. this copy has suffered rather severe water damage along the front edge, extending through the front edge of most of the book body, not interfering with text. front free end-paper is missing a 3" piece from top edge due to water damage, free end-paper is also seperated from book body, but still attached to partner end-paper. However, this copy is EXTREMELY UNIQUE. laid-in are: a "Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy" card, a ticket to "admit bearer to launching platform" with name of ship "Farragut" and date "Nov. 21st 1918" written by hand on the back, also laid-in is a set of correspondence beginning November 12, 1918 and ending November 26, 1918, which discuss one "Mrs. Potts" attempts to become a sponsor of the ship "Farragut", and finally resulting in her enstatement as a sponsor. One letter remarkably refers to an automobile as a machine, "We will arrange to have a machine call for you at 11 A.M.". The final note, dated after the ship's launch, specifies that a series of 12 prints will be sent to Mrs. Potts of the launch, of which one print is also laid-in with a picture of Mrs. Potts with flowers, preparing to break a champagne bottle, and also of the ship leaving the hold. Also laid-in is a note from one of this book's compilers, Anne Martin Hall, dated December 27, 1918, inviting Mrs. Potts to become a member of the "Society of Sponsors of the United States Navy". incribed to Mrs. Potts on front free endpaper by unkown source. what is remarkable: there is no water damage to the laid-in items. A fascinating copy.
