A San Diego Yacht Club Commodore in 1910, -(about the time the M/V Silver Gate became the Club's home)-, was born in 1876 in Virginia City, Nevada, joined SDYC in 1904 and frequently wrote columns for the "Pacific Motor Boat" magazine between 1909 and 1916 as "Penciler." He served as a naval lieutenant in World War I. Benham taught navigations for the State Board of Education program at Sweetwater Union HIgh School and to members of the San Diego Yacht Club. He owned a sailing yacht as well as several launches, including the Neptune, purchased from the Hotel del Coronado. Commodore Benham encouraged racing among all the power boat enthusiasts of the day.
