Black buckram boards, 8" X 9" square of original cover, with gilt tile and embossed insignia, mounted onto leaf before title page. iv, 12 pages of text entitled "Windsor Castle." 39 leaves of black and white plates, with 15 tinted lithographs of views, and 24 plates entitled Details of Windsor Castle." Oversize- quite large. Extremely rare. Cover title, from mounted cover remnant: "Gandy and Baud's Windsor Castle." Title inside continues, "From original drawings made expressly for this work by Messrs. Gandy and Baud, Principal Assistants to the late Sir Jeffry Wyatville during the great repairs and alterations of the castle." Preface notes this is "the first part of the Pictorial and Practical Illustrations of Windsor Castle." 12 pages of historical text entitled "Windsor Castle" include 2 chapters. Chapter 1: "Historical Events and Personages belonging to and connected with Windsor Castle, from the Norman Conquest to the reign of Queen Victoria." Chapter 2: "Descriptive particulars of the site, architectural features, and other characteristics, of Windsor Castle, with references to, and notices of, the accompanying series of drawings." Chapter 2 includes a ground plan. A similar title appeared later by a different publisher. Dimensions of book are 22" x 15.25" x 1", whipping weight is 11 pounds. Good, library binding solid, rebound; ex-library marks and stamps typical of a reference book. Several perforation stamps, including on one engraving margin, and on one facsimile page. Foxing spots throughout, to varying degrees; most lithographs are unaffected.

Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. folio. pp. 2 p.l., 12. engraved frontis. portrait of B.Baud & 40 lithographed plates (16 tinted). wood-engraved title vignette & 1 ground plan in the text. 19th century half morocco, large lettering piece on upper cover (recased, joints rubbed, spine ends & corners worn, some foxing throughout as usual). First Edition. Gandy and Baud assisted Jeffry Wyatt in the remodelling of the Upper Ward and Round Tower of Windsor Castle for King George IV and King William IV, 1824-40. In 1824 the House of Commons had voted 150,000 pounds for the improvements that were to render the castle a fit residence for the Sovereign but by completion, the project had cost almost three quarters of a milllion pounds. Wyatt's designs were chosen over those of John Soane, Robert Smirke and John Nash. On the laying of the first stone, the architect was authorized by the King to call himself 'Wyatville' and to adopt the word 'Windsor' as his motto; in 1828, on the completion of the royal quarters, he was honoured with a knighthood and a residence in the Winchester Tower.
